"Who would even want to smell like lemon cake?"

If this thought has never crossed your mind, you’ve just found your people!

Gourmand perfumes hold a special place in my heart – they are where my love for fragrances began, and they give me a sense of comfort and olfactory “safety.” Citrus-gourmand perfumes have this unique quality: although they are usually sweet, delicious, and realistically capture their inspiration (like cookies or lemon cake), the citrus element beautifully cuts through the sweetness, making these scents not overwhelming, but rather pleasantly refreshing. This means you don’t have to worry about the fragrance being “too sweet”!

In recent years, I’ve had the opportunity to discover many scents in this category, and I’ve decided to gather some of my favorites for you. What’s even better, you’ll find both high-end perfumes and more affordable options here!

Ex Idolo Love & Crime

The first suggestion is a high-end fragrance, but truly worth trying, especially if you already know you enjoy citrusy-dessert scents.

Ex Idolo Love & Crime is inspired by a dark love story. In 1905, May Cole baked a cake for her partner, Thomas Howard. Sounds innocent, right? However, the story takes on a darker tone when we learn that May hid metal files in the cake, which the couple used to escape from prison. The perfume captures this story by blending deep cocoa notes with joyful, juicy citrus.

For me, they are perfection in the “orange cake” category. The scent resembles a freshly baked lemon cake, with a burst of orange and a subtle hint of spices that add warmth. While the note list only mentions star anise, I personally sense nutmeg and cinnamon as well. The cocoa in the background doesn’t dominate, but rather lends the composition seriousness and depth. An added bonus is the longevity, which ensures the fragrance stays on the skin for hours. Yum!

Theodoros Kalotinis Lemon Tart

The second suggestion takes a completely different approach to the citrus dessert theme. Theodoros Kalotinis Lemon Tart is a fragrance that literally transports us to the moment of eating a lemon tart. It has everything you love in such a dessert – a buttery, crumbly base, creamy mascarpone filling, a touch of whipped cream, and, of course, lemon accents. The top is decorated with lightly caramelized lemon slices.

This fragrance is lighter and more “airy” than the previous one. The buttery and creamy accords make Lemon Tart not overwhelming, even in summer. It’s a scent I reach for year-round – both on hot days and during chilly winter evenings. Theodoros Kalotinis takes a photorealistic approach to gourmand scents, which can be a plus but also a minus – it depends on whether you enjoy such a literal interpretation. Personally, I’m a huge fan of this literalness, though I realize it’s not for everyone. If you decide to try this fragrance, be ready to smell like… butter for a few (3-4) hours! 😊

Akro Bake

When Olivier Cresp takes on creating gourmand perfumes, you can expect a true olfactory feast. The “father of gourmands,” who created the legendary Angel for Thierry Mugler, has now presented us with Bake – his interpretation of lemon cake.

This fragrance is like a freshly baked cake that blends vanilla, lemon zest, and light alcoholic accents to keep it from being too sweet. While the lemon cake dominates at first, after about half an hour, it transforms into a more vanilla-centered composition. Eventually, it evolves into a sweet, vanilla cloud. Bake lasts around 5-6 hours on the skin with moderate projection – subtle, but present.

Regalien Hazz

Finally, I have something light, airy, and definitely less sweet than the other fragrances. Hazz by the Turkish brand Regalien is a scent of citrus cookies – thin, crisp, dusted with powdered sugar. It’s a subtle composition where citrus notes intertwine with a powdery, slightly vanilla undertone. At times, you can also sense a hint of lemon and orange cream.

Hazz is the perfect choice for warmer days when you want to feel fresh without the worry of being overwhelmed by the scent. The longevity is about 5 hours, and the projection is rather delicate, making it a discreet and subtle fragrance.

These are just a few of my citrus-gourmand suggestions that will surely brighten up your day. What are your favorite fragrances in this category?! 🌸
